Unlike mobile apps, users stay on one screen, so there isn\u2019t as much leeway to note a change in context by switching states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">The goal of your chatbot should be apparent throughout the decision process \u2014 from the copy to technical integration options. These objectives will come from discovering who the users are, their lifestyle, and pain points.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">2. Instead of making guesses yourself, try different options and ask your users to think out loud.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">3. Experiment with different questions about the users.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">In my experience, a <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/shopjessicabuckley.com\/blog\/guide-developing-bot-personalities\/\">bot persona<\/a> that truly fulfill your user\u2019s needs requires both what I call \u201c<strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">flat data<\/strong>\u201d (age, gender, occupation, etc.) and <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">dynamic data <\/strong>that are situation-specific. The latter type of data could be: their work routine, the thing they hate doing the most at work, etc.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6580\" style=\"width: 1378px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/19HZeUt6Zqc5JWaTt8KDNsA.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6580\" class=\"wp-image-6580 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/19HZeUt6Zqc5JWaTt8KDNsA.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1368\" height=\"766\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Knowing the user\u2019s typical schedule allows you to design a product that <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">complements<\/strong> this schedule. (Credit: <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"http:\/\/bananaworks.co.nz\/m\/what-s-new\/149-the-average-wechat-user-from-2015-official-data.html\">bananaworks<\/a>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Knowing users\u2019 schedules and habits in a specific context will help you design a conversation that they could <strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">enjoy<\/strong> having, not just endure for productivity\u2019s sake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">For example, if you know closing out tickets is the IT technicians\u2019 least favorite part of their job, you could have some humor when they\u2019ve gone through all their tickets:<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">???? \u201cHooray, it\u2019s only downhill from here!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">When they start with their first ticket, you probably don\u2019t want to have this kind of straightforward humor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">I was inspired to incorporate questions about the various situations users get placed in by the various \u201cday in the life of\u201d videos from YouTube creators. As you follow along their day, you get a sense of things like what they look forward to doing, what they put off until the very end, and how they wrap up their day. Gather KPI\u2019s that will actually allow you to make changes.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Like mobile app products, data points such as the percentage of returning users don\u2019t do much good without knowing which task had the highest rate of completion and which had the lowest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">However, because conversational UI relies on technology such as natural language processing, it requires that you also have data such as:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s list list--unordered marginBottom-l lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\n<li>When a bot\u2019s answers don\u2019t match the trained answers<\/li>\n<li>When the bot keeps the user inside of an endless loop of error messages no matter what they type, because it\u2019s not properly matching the user\u2019s answer to the question<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">By knowing when these unintended actions happen within a workflow, you will be able to re-design to always provide users with a choice of action.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s list list--unordered marginBottom-l lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\n<li>The kind of questions a user asks that the bot was not designed to answer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">This will help you determine efforts to expand the different steps a user goes through to achieve established objective, <em>or <\/em>determine a new objective if users\u2019 interests shine light on an objective you hadn\u2019t previously considered.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17787\" style=\"width: 760px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/topintnts.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17787\" class=\"wp-image-17787 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/topintnts.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shopjessicabuckley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/topintnts.png 750w, https:\/\/shopjessicabuckley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/topintnts-600x300.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17787\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Knowing what users are asking for is essential in meeting that demand through design. Know the strengths and weaknesses of each medium.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Take advantage of visual aids when you can.
