As far as I know, it\u2019s been around for some time and originated in <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@Stanford\">Stanford<\/a>\/<a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/www.sri.com\">SRI<\/a>. NABC stands for:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s list list--unordered marginBottom-l lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\n<li><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">N \u2014 Need<\/strong>. \u00abN\u00bb is the most important factor in the method. An idea without a practical need for it remains just what it is: a good idea and nothing more.<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">A \u2014 Approach<\/strong>. \u00abA\u00bb is usually a point of departure for most activities, but with the NABC method, A always comes after N.<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">B \u2014 Benefit<\/strong>. \u00abB\u00bb stands for the innovative elements \u2014 of an idea (USP: unique selling proposition) \u2014 , in other words, that which constitutes its uniqueness.<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">C \u2014 Competition<\/strong>. \u00abC\u00bb stands for a study of the competition existing in the area concerned. C is often mistaken for N. C, however, focuses on the reality within which a concept has to function.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">How to apply\u00a0NABC<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-l marginBottom-m c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5\">Before you\u00a0start<\/h3>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Have your <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"http:\/\/www.designkit.org\/methods\/3\">HMW-question<\/a> (link by <a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@IDEOorg\">IDEO.org<\/a>) ready e.g. \u00abHow might we raise awareness for\u2026 bla bla bla\u2026\u00bb. In a group of ideally 3\u20138 people, conduct a brain-writing exercise (other methods may be applied).<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s list list--unordered marginBottom-l lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\n<li>Hand a sheet of paper with your HMW-question to every team member.<\/li>\n<li>Each team member gets 30\u201360 seconds to jot down an idea and then passes the sheet to the next person that builds up on the previous idea.<\/li>\n<li>Time-box and iterate until each person has written an idea on every sheet. Evaluate, consolidate your ideas and pursue the best one. If you have multiple teams you may also swap the idea-papers between the teams. Apply NABC:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s list list--unordered marginBottom-l lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">\n<li>On a flip chart, formulate the need (N) you are addressing, your approach\/idea to address the need (A), the benefits (B) of your idea and potential competition \u00a9.<\/li>\n<li>Once you have your NABC defined make it tangible. Do visual sketches of your potential solution or even build something.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">These steps can be done rapidly. We have applied the NABC method in quick 10 min sprints just to get first ideas. It forces you to think beyond the idea as it is grounded in the original problem and user needs. Last but not least, applying NABC returns first tangible outputs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Depending on your need you may scale the method and combine it with other tools.
