Usually, I hear the classics, \u2018we don\u2019t have enough time\u2019 and \u2018we don\u2019t have enough money\u2019, but occasionally I\u2019ll also get \u2018users don\u2019t know what they want\u2019, or \u2018you\u2019re the UX expert \u2014 why don\u2019t you just decide?\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Avoiding user research isn\u2019t an option.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><strong class=\"c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-5 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">The more tactful answer:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Once someone outside of your development team starts using your product, they are user testing it \u2014 they are interesting. For example, if no-one buys your product, you know that no-one is buying it; and if no-one is using your product, then you know they\u2019re not using it. What you don\u2019t know is why they\u2019re not buying it, or why they\u2019re not using it. You might know the <em>what<\/em> (people aren\u2019t buying your product) but not the <em>why<\/em>. Believe me \u2014<br \/>\nyour manager or client is going to care <em>why<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">This is the value of UX research, and why you employ UX researchers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">To find out <em>why<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/10juvKjqWLhVWjqnwAGs2rA.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6580\" src=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/10juvKjqWLhVWjqnwAGs2rA.png\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\"This is the value of UX research, and why you employ UX researchers.\"&lt;\/<br \/>\nSo, if you can\u2019t choose <em>not<\/em> to research, what are your choices?<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Here are four of the most common choices people make. Two equally good, and two equally bad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Let\u2019s start with the bad.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Bad choice #1 \u2014 Big\u00a0Bang<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Choose to build something big and release it \u2014 then ignore the user!<br \/>\n<a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/1KJSl5d-6te5ATPX-VmvcjQ.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6580\" src=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/1KJSl5d-6te5ATPX-VmvcjQ.png\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">This happens all the time, and it is always a mistake. Once you release the product, you will find that fewer people are are buying it or using it than you had hoped, but you won\u2019t have any budget to go and find out why.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">If someone tells you about their successful project that didn\u2019t require any user testing, they were lucky, not smart. It is a bit like taking investment advice from a lottery winner. It worked for them, but it probably won\u2019t work for you!<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Bad choice #2 \u2014 Gym\u00a0Junky<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Spend too much time researching before actually delivering a product<br \/>\n<a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/1AeRfbrykc1WvY64QbFl-rw.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6580\" src=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/1AeRfbrykc1WvY64QbFl-rw.png\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Although rare, it happens. To be a football player you need to play football. It\u2019s essential to spend time training both on the field and in the gym, but at some stage, you need to play a game \u2014 and better sooner than later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">The same goes for software development. At some stage, you\u2019ll need to launch a product. Your time spent researching will make your product strong and fit, but as with sports, better to dive in sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Good choice #1 \u2014 MVP<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Choose to build something small, release it and learn.<br \/>\n<a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/1VP8ZYTHs_7Py6MgOaO1bEA.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6580\" src=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/1VP8ZYTHs_7Py6MgOaO1bEA.png\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">MVP stands for Minimum Viable Product. This essentially means you start by making something small, launch it (to some or all of your users), then monitor how it goes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">This means spending limited or no time conducting user research upfront, but instead committing to invest in research, and listening to what users have to say, once the product is in the market and they are using it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">You then work in close collaboration with these initial users to add features and build out the product over time. You make what they need rather than what <em>you think<\/em> they need.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">This approach ensures you\u2019re facing the right direction before you go full steam ahead.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginTop-xl marginBottom-l c-black lineHeight-xl fontSize-xl fontWeight-5 breakPointM-lineHeight-xxl breakPointM-fontSize-xxl\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">Good choice #2 \u2014 Research\u00a0First<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Choose to conduct a small amount of research followed by a small amount of development. Then repeat.<br \/>\n<a class=\"link link--blue fontWeight-4\"href=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/1rYKVRgGDun7BHruHxZr8Ug.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6580\" src=\"https:\/\/marvel7077.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/1rYKVRgGDun7BHruHxZr8Ug.png\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Understanding what problems your users face, then matching those problems with opportunities your product can solve, is a good way to kick off a project.<br \/>\nTesting one user early in the project is better than testing 50 near the\u00a0end. \u2014 Steve\u00a0Krug<br \/>\nEveryday, your team makes hundreds of tiny decisions about how the product will be designed, structured, marketed and developed. In isolation, each tiny decision doesn\u2019t seem very consequential, but when put together it is the difference between a product that succeeds or fails.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Now, obviously you can\u2019t conduct research to solve each tiny question that arises. You can, though, spend time at the start of a project getting everyone (developers included) to truly understand and empathise with your users. This enables and empowers your team to keep the user front of mind when making every tiny decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pageWrap pageWrap--s marginBottom-m paddingBottom-s c-slate lineHeight-l fontSize-l fontWeight-3 breakPointM-fontSize-xl breakPointM-lineHeight-xl\">Notice that the only real difference between the \u2018MVP\u2019 approach and the \u2018Research First\u2019 approach is if you choose to test first, or build first.
